Is there a future for doctors in Malaysia??

Nowadays nearly 30 medical school in Malaysia, and compared to UK, there are approximately about 28 medical school that are producing doctors. Malaysia had previously just produces about 4000 House officer(trainee doctor). Moreover, there are also influx from overseas such as Russia, Indonesia and India. The major thing that we need to discuss, is it depend on quantity or quality?? As a medical student, i myself, cannot see the future of doctors now in Malaysia. According to research done in peninsula, previously 10-20 years ago, trainee doctors are assign for 1 to 20-30 patient, but now trainee doctors are 1 to 2 patient. As an addition, many specialist are complaining of incompetency of trainee doctors coming from russia and indonesia, as well local new medical school. This is just one problem. The other things is that when Malaysia are classified as developed country according to statistics of 1 to 300; doctor to patient in 2013 or 2014, where to put the remaining doctors in the hospital?? Are Malaysia want to pursue as an exporter of the doctors, while other field such as engineering, hospitalities, pharmaceuticals and technologist remain shortage in human resource not to mention lack of quality?

Besides that, towards to modernization and developed country, people, will be more specific as an example, if a patient complain of skin infection- he will straightly go to dermatologist, while of patient complain of muscle cramp, he will straightly go to orthopedics. As a result, there will be no more clinic with only degree doctors.

If the government remain lenient and still giving lots and lots more accreditation to overseas university and private university, trust me, there will be no more respect to medical field and there will be no more future to our new generation of doctors.

  1. Salaam,

I am a high school graduate (finished my SPM in 2011) and will be taking pre-u this year. Maybe Form 6 STPM. My results thus far indicate I am academically able to go into medicine. But that may or may not change.

So hopefully if everything were to go well I could enroll in a medical program in 2013 or 2014 and maybe finish the MBBS 5 year program by 2018 or 2019. Would it still be worth it by then?

I’ve always wanted to be a physician since I was kid when I could finally understand what an auntie and uncle of mine did for a living. I have no dreams of it being easy or being a millionaire by 25. Its just a meaningful profession to me. Not just a job but a profession. I'm genuinely inot medicine for passion.

Recently, news of oversupply of medical graduates and imcompetency of some HO’s have lowered my spirits of entering this field. Will I have even the slightest chance of prospect? Or will I be operating a restaurant with a doctor’s degree?

Your honest opinion on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers.
